Bihar Assembly Ready for another Turbulent Session
Patna: Dec. 6, 2007
After the last Assembly session this past spring and the special sitting during the last monsoon season – both destined to go down in the history of Bihar as one of the most disruptive, farcical, and vulgar display of absolute partisanship, the state government once again is bracing to face a hostile opposition with the new session all set to begin from Friday.
There will be a total of six sittings with the first day set to honor those leaders who had passed away since the last Assembly session. After that, if last two years are any indication, it would be business as usual. Charges, counter-charges, party-line rhetoric, and the ever-popular walk-outs are once again expected to make the headlines with no real, substantial work to be done.
Sources said the Opposition has vowed not to stage walk-outs this session and instead corner the government on various issues including implementation of programs funded by the Central government, irregularities in the employment guarantee scheme, dwindling law and order situation, and assaults on protestors in the name of good governance.
Meanwhile, security is being tightened around the state Assembly building. With all four side doors locked, only the main entrance would be used to allow legislators and pass-holders to enter the building. All vehicles would also have to undergo close scrutiny irrespective of its occupants, reports said.
