Opposition Scores First; Assembly Gate to be Re-opened

Patna: Dec. 8, 2007

Buckling under the pressure from the opposition parties, the authorities ordered the reopening of Gate Number 4 of the Bihar Assembly from Monday though only valid pass-holders would be allowed to use this entrance, officials in Patna said on Saturday.

As reported, on the opening day of the winter session of the state Assembly on Friday, the opposition leaders led by the leader of the Opposition and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri, staged a protest against the government's decision to lock all gates except the main entrance in view of the security of the legislators.

The decision to reopen another gate was taken after the Bihar Assembly chairperson Uday Narain Chowdhary met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi and held an all-party meet with various leaders.

While the state government has maintained the gates were locked down on account of security concerns of the legislators, the opposition described the move as paranoia by the Nitish government.
