Canadian Team Interested in Bihar-Canada Agricultural Ties

Patna: Dec. 8, 2007

A 10-member Canadian delegate from Manitoba comprising its Deputy Premiere Rosanne Wowchuk, the Agriculture Minister, and Manitoba's legislator Vidu Jha, originally from Bihar, met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and expressed its interest in improving Bihar's agricultural scenario by investing in food processing, agricultural development park, and other farm-related exchanges.

The delegate led by Jha met with the CM at his residence and handed him over a primary proposal of the schemes while also extending invitation to Kumar to visit Manitoba to promote bi-lateral agricultural ties between the two nations.

The team also visited areas in Hajipur to probe the possibility of setting up of a fertilizer research center there and showed its interest in developing and sharing technology to facilitate export of mangos and litchis from Bihar.

Jha, born in Deoghar, had left for Canada nearly 37 years ago. He is the first Bihari to have ever served in the Canadian government as its state legislator.

"There is certainly a wind of change is blowing in Bihar under the NDA government. This is the first time in long time I am seeing positive changes in the state and that is because the state is being run by some very able leaders," Jha said.

"While any agreement between India and Canada is in the hands of the Central government, the fact that the Canadian team took the pain to visit Bihar is indicative of a changed environment in the state," Nitish Kumar said.

State Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh and Cabinet Secretary Girish Shankar were also present at the meeting.
