Patna: Dec. 8, 2007

Crackdown on red-beaconed vehicles in Patna. Photo by Shashi UttamThe traffic police in Patna, during its crackdown on vehicles fitted with official red beacon on the top, hit a bump when it detained the official car of NDA's deputy chief whip Ram Pravesh Rai for nearly three hours at Dak Bungalow crossing on Saturday.

As reported, Rai's vehicle which was being taken by his driver to an auto repair shop on Exhibition Road was stopped by the police at Dak Bungalow crossing around noon during the crackdown that began early morning.

When the traffic police run a check on the vehicle, they found it missing from the list of cars with red beacon.

Rai, after being informed about the confusion, arrived at the Dak Bungalow crossing but it took more than two hours and a call from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and legislator Giriraj Singh before the police finally allowed the vehicle to leave.

This, however, did not impress Rai who said he would seek punitive actions against the erring officials who, he said, were the least bit interested in seeking the truth and were aggressively pushing to impound the vehicle despite him revealing his identity.
