Fernandes Blames himself for the Failure of Socialism
Patna: Dec. 15, 2007
NDA convener and veteral socialist leader George Fernandes, on the opening day of the two-day seminar organized by the Lok Chetna Manch in Patna on Saturday, lamented the current political environment of the nation while blaming himself for failing to spread the message of socialism among the politicians.
"I cannot escape blame for the current weaknesses in the socialist movement that is on the verge of extinction. Today's politics is devoid of any social thought and this is more visible in the UPA-led Central government than anywhere else," Fernandes said adding corruption was so rampant in the present government that it had to resort to dishonesty 'even while electing the President of India'.
The Janata Dal (U) leader who is all but forgotten by his own party members in the struggle for power both at the state and national level, also took a stab on the left parties saying the Marxists were bent on destroying West Bengal on the issue of Nandigram and were engaging in similar activities in other states further damaging the core of secularism.
"While other socialist leaders are also responsible for the current plight of the nation, I am largely to be blamed for failing to spread the message of socialism," Fernandes said adding he could not evade the truth and any party that was based on lie and deceit was bound to self-destruct.
Among other socialist leaders who attended the meeting included Ramvachan Paswan, P. K. Sinha, N. K. Singh, Rajkishore Verma and Parmatma Gupta of Uttar Pradesh, Gopal Chatterjee and Alok Pal of West Bengal, and K.K. N. Reddy of Hyderabad.
