Patna: Dec. 15, 2007

Prisoner Commits Suicide. Photo by Shashi Uttam40-year old Nagina Manjhi, a notorious criminal and an active member of the outlawed Maoist outfit in Gaya district, was found dead hanging from an iron gate of the Beur Jail infirmary where he was being treated for some minor ailment, officials in Patna said on Saturday.

According to the report, Manjhi, using his 'lungi' as a rope, made a noose and hung himself from the gate. By the time other inmates noticed him with the noose in his neck, he was already dead.

His body was sent to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) for an autopsy.

The incident caused quite a stir in the jail where other inmates accused the prison officials of failing to provide Manjhi prompt medical help.

Jail Superintendent Dilip Kumar, while denying the allegations, said the prisoner was suffering from a case of depression and had talked about ending his life in the past.

Manjhi was brought to the Beur Jail after his dramatic arrest in Phulwarisharif last June, officials said.
