Archaeology Report on Chirand Released after 37 years
Patna: Dec. 19, 2007
37 years after the government abandoned the Chirand archaeology project in Chhapra district, state Art and Culture Minister Janardan Singh Sigriwal, in Patna on Wednesday, released the finding of the study in a book called "Chirand Utkhanan Prativedan" amidst the presence of nation's prominent archaeologists.
The project was started in 1963 under the leadership of noted archaeologist Dr. Bhagwati Sharan Verma but then dumped in 1970 by the then state government on reasons known only to them.
85-year old Verma who was also present on the occasion said artifacts of Neolithic age dating back 1800-1200 BC were discovered in the Gangetic plains and in Chirand area in Chhapra district leading to massive excavations in the area in the '60s. "However, due to the political climate at the time, the project was abandoned in 1970," said Dr. Verma.
Sigriwal said soon the report would be translated in Hindi for other experts to review the findings.
