Husband Sought in Wife's Murder

Woman murdered by husband. Photo by Shashi UttamThe police in Patna on Wednesday recovered the body of 30-year old Mamta Devi from her apartment in R-Block under Sachivalaya police station. Marks on her neck indicated she may have died of strangulation though the official cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Sachivalaya DSP Sridhar Mandal said neighbors in the area had seen Mamta with her husband Sudhir Rai, a clerk in a government office, in the morning. Later, eyewitnesses saw Rai leaving the peon quarter after locking it from outside.

When the neighbors did not see Mamta throughout the day, they informed the police who broke open the door only to find her body lying on the floor in a room.

Mamta's neck bore marks of a rope-like object indicating she was was strangled. Signs of struggle also indicated foul play in Mamta's death.

"Based on the preliminary investigation, it is evident that Mamta was a victim of domestic violence and efforts are being made to locate and arrest her husband Sudhir Rai," said the DP.
