Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto Assassinated
Rawalpindi, Pakistan: Dec. 27, 2007
Pakistan's opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed 20 others at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi.
Bhutto was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital, hardly a couple of miles from the scene of bombing, where she was declared dead on arrival, Pakistani officials said.
It was not immediately clear if Bhutto died from flying shrapnel or of bullet wounds, they said.
As riots broke out in different parts of Pakistan, police warned citizens to stay home to avoid any tragedy.
Bhutto's death comes at a time when she was campaigning for the Jan. 8 general elections earlier announced by Pakistan's President Gen. Parwez Musharraf.
