Patna University senate on Saturday, amidst high drama both inside and outside the senate, passed the 2008-09 budget of Rs.90.86 crore while projecting a loss of Rs. 80 crore due to a number of loans, dues, and backlogs to various agencies including an amount of Rs. 33.7 crore to the University Grant Commission.

The budget also made provision for repair of dormitories for the graduate students, payment of pensions to the retired teachers and other university employees, dearness allowance, and repair and remodeling of the existing buildings.

Prof. Bhagwan Prasad Singh presented the budget in the presence of Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri, Secretary Dr. Vibhash Kumar Yadav, Exam Controller Dr. Surendra Snigdha and a number of former Vice Chancellors of Patna University.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students outside the Wheeler Senate Hall defied the security arrangement and protested against the management to press for their demands including holding of the university students' elections.

Calling the Vice Chancellor a dictator, students led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) students' wing, in a sign of protest, stripped into their underwears and demanded Simadri's resignation while also demanding equal participation in the Senate meeting and lowering of the college tuition fees.

Several students were arrested for creating disturbance outside the Senate Hall though most were released at the end of the day.
