Govt Seeks Central Reinforcement to Tackle Naxal Surge
Bhagalpur: July 1, 2007
Following a drastic surge in Naxal-related violence in Bihar, the state government on Sunday sounded an alert in all terrorist-hit areas while asking the Central government to rush in ten companies of central para-military forces to tackle the ultras who have killed over a dozen cops and other civilians in just last couple of weeks.
IG (Headquarters) Anil Sinha said security had been beefed up in Rohtas, Gaya, Bhojpur, Arwal, Jehanabad, Nawada, and Jamui where Naxalites had been very active in last few weeks killing hapless, under-trained, ill-equipped security officials while stealing police arms and ammunition.
Meanwhile, encouraged by the government lackadaisical attitude towards the growing Naxal violence in the state, heavily armed Maoists in Madanpur under Sherghati block in Gaya district on Sunday night attacked a CRPF camp resulting in an exchange of gunfire that lasted over an hour with over 500 rounds fired from both sides, officials in Gaya said.
While no casualty was reported from either side, a raid operation has been launched to flush out terrorists in the area.
As reported earlier, hundreds of ultras in Rohtas district on Saturday night attacked a police outpost in Baghela killing six security officials and seven civilians before fleeing with a large cache of police rifles and ammunition.
According to the Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah, raids are being conducted in many areas but results seem to negate that claim.
Concerned with the sudden surge in Naxal activities, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday held a meeting with Amanullah and Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha and directed them to launch an all-out war on the terrorists while admonishing them to protect the villagers from further attacks.
