Auto-rickshaw Drivers Threaten Weeklong Strike in Patna

Patna: July 3, 2007

Tempo drivers in Patna under the banner of District Auto-Rickshaw Drivers' Association, on Tuesday announced their decision to launch a protest against the administration's ongoing crackdown on illegal and dangerous drivers causing huge monetary loss to them.

Threatening to go on a weeklong strike beginning July 10, the leaders of the association said a dharna would be held on July 8 at Kargil Chowk to protest against what they described as police highhandedness and unnecessary harassment of people who were just trying to make a living.

"We are heavily fined for minor infractions which render our profession essentially useless," said the organization general secretary.

As reported before, the auto-rickshaw owners took off their vehicles from the streets of Patna last Thursday after the traffic police pulled them over and levied heavy fines on various traffic violations.
