An electrical short circuit at the main branch of the State Bank of India west of Gandhi Maidan on Wednesday morning caused a fire on the second floor of the building destroying furniture and other items worth over Rs. 2 lakh.

The fire, first noticed by a bank employee, started in the circuit room at around 10:00 am. The building was evacuated and by the time the fire officials were informed, the fire had spread in the entire room that contained non-essential papers, furniture, and other office equipment.

Five fire tenders arrived at the bank within minutes of being notified. It took them about half an hour to completely extinguish the flames and bring the situation under control.

Though no one was said to be hurt in the incident, two firefighters had to be treated for smoke inhalation, officials said.

The bank is investigating the cause of short circuitry, bank Assistant General Manager B. P. Sinha said.
