Rain Makes Life Miserable in Patna
Patna: July 5, 2007
Heavy rain in Patna on Thursday particularly in the late hours, while providing people the much-needed relief from the scorching heat, turned the entire city into a living nightmare as water-logging nearly everywhere shattered the claims of the administration that the state capital was prepared to deal with the heavy monsoon rain.
With no sign of any improvement in the drainage system as earlier claimed by the local administration, Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Lohanipur, Langartoli, Machchuatoli, Sabjibagh, Kadam Kuan, Bakarganj, Shastrinagar, Pataliputra Colony, Mithapur and other low-lying areas were under knee to ankle-deep water causing vehicles to stall while making it very difficult for pedestrians to move around.
Also, as always, manholes in many areas erupted and dumped piles of garbage further aggravating the misery of Patna residents.
As if that was not enough, road and railway bridge construction works in many areas took its own toll turning those places into mini pools with a lot of slushy mud.
Meanwhile, Urban Development Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey ordered sacking of two junior engineers for failing to repair pump houses resulting in heavy water-logging in Patna City area.
Choubey also ordered cleaning up of two large sewerage pipes in Bakarganj and Patna City within a week while also directing the Water Board to continue to run the sewerage treatment plants to their full capacity.
