Yet Another Boat Accident in Ganga; 1 Drowns

Patna: July 6, 2007

At least one person was dead when an overcrowded country boat turned over and capsized in Ganga near Malahi village in Barh in Patna district on Friday morning officials in Patna said.

The incident occurred when a small boat containing nearly three dozen farm workers left the Malahi Ghat to take them to Banda diara at around 8:00 am Friday morning. However, just few minutes into the water, the boat lost control due to strong current and the extra weight and tipped over dumping all passengers in the flooded river.

While most commuters swam to safety, one person who was identified as 50-year old Singheshwar Sah, a resident of Malahi, was not so lucky and drowned, officials said.

Sah's body was pulled out by the divers who were looking for more drowning victims.

Officials rushed to the spot to monitor the operation.

Arrangements were being made to help the family of the victim under various government social schemes, officials said.
