Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while releasing a book on the freedom fighter Peer Ali Khan at his residence in Patna on Saturday, said July 7 from now on would be celebrated as a state event and the martyr's life and history would be taught at all government schools.
Kumar also officially named the children's park near Gandhi Maidan as Peer Ali Park and renamed Riding Road and Taylor Road as Peer Ali Marg.
The book named 'Bihar Mein Gadar: Jan Vidroh ki Zameen Par' has been prepared by the state archive as its first in a series of many to honor obscure freedom fighters from Bihar.
Ali was hanged to death on July 7, 1857 at the order of the then Commissioner William Taylor near what is now known as the Children's Park near Gandhi Maidan, officials said.
Those present on the occasion included Energy Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav, Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, historian Imtiaz Ahmed, Gandhi Museum director Razi Ahmed and state archive consultant H. R. Hemant, among others.
A function in honor of Peer Ali was also organized at Patna College. Former Union Minister and Bhartiya Janata leader Dr. C. P. Thakur was also present on the occasion.
