Special Cell to Cater to Mauritians of Bihari Origin
Patna: July 7, 2007
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said the government was going to create a special cell to accommodate people of Bihari origin settled in the magnificent island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean as a way to encourage Mauritians to trace their ancestral roots in Bihar.
"I understand the pain of Mauritians of Bihari origin who are desperate to discover their ancestral lineage and have nothing more than their district of origin and the vessel number that carried their forefathers to Mauritius as indentured labors and in some other capacity," Kumar said.
The Chief Minister said the state government, with the help of the Mauritius government, will prepare a comprehensive database of all Biharis who migrated to Mauritius in an effort to enable them discover their roots in Bihar.
Once completed, it would become easier for the Mauritians to find their ancestral root by approaching this special cell which would then do the required investigation for them, Kumar said.
The Chief Minister who will be visiting Mauritius between July 27 and 31 to participate in the Bihar Week, further said a life-size statue of Sir Sewsaagar Ramghoolam, also known as the father of the nation in Mauritius, would be installed at the Exhibition Road-Gandhi Maidan intersection.
The statue would be unveiled by Naveenchandra Ramghoolam, Mauritius Prime Minister and the grandson of Sir Ramghoolam, during Holi next year, the Chief Minister said.
A cultural show at Gandhi Maidan will also be presented in honor of the Prime Minister, he said.
