Congress Wants a Puppet President: BJP Leader
Patna: July 10, 2007
Senior Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday at a press conference in Patna said the Congress was bent on installing a "rubber stamp" President to ensure the success of its agenda despite allegations of massive financial irregularities and abuse of power to save a murder accused against the UPA presidential candidate Pratibha Patil.
Displaying a report from the Reserve Bank of India, Prasad asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to answer if he would support a person like Patil who was charged of misappropriating Rs. 3 crore involving a cooperative society.
"Mr. Prime Minister, you were the Finance Minister of India and also the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Would you support a person like Pratima Patil who has been charged with misappropriating cooperative money or has used her position as the Governor of a state to get a family member off the hook in a murder case?" Prasad demanded an answer from the Prime Minister.
"It is customary to do a background check even for an ordinary job so why not for a presidential candidate," the BJP leader asked.
Others present at the conference were BJP media coordinator Sanjay Mayukh, state vice president Vishwanath Bhagat and spokesperson Vinod Narayan Jha.
