Railway to Investigate Alleged Sexual Harassment Case
Patna: July 10, 2007
The Railways, at the behest of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, ordered a two-member committee to investigate the charges of sexual harassment of the sister of a woman IAS officer by the DIG, Railway Protection Force (RPF) Premjit Rawal, on the Delhi-Patna Sampoorna Kranti Express last Sunday.
At a press conference on Tuesday evening, RPF Deputy General Manager M. K. Sinha said RPF IG Gopal Gupta and Northeast Railway Security Commissioner Jaya Chauhan would be heading the investigation and present their report within a week.
Sinha, however, said the matter appeared to have been blown out of proportion. "Rawal was not drunk as earlier reported in the media. He, while returning to his berth after using the restroom, stumbled and accidentally touched the woman sleeping on the lower berth. While Rawal apologized to the woman, the lady on the upper berth took it in a different way and filed a complaint of sexual harassment," he said.
"However, since the case involves a woman, the incident is being investigated by a high-level committee," Sinha said.
