Senior IAS Officer Suspended on DA Charges
Patna: July 13, 2007
The state government on Friday suspended minor irrigation secretary S. S. Verma, a 1981-batch IAS officer, on charges of accumulating wealth out of proportion of his known sources of income, state Personnel Secretary Amir Subhani said.
Verma, who has been declared an absconder since vigilance raids at his houses a few days ago, was relieved of his duties because of the seriousness of charges leveled against him, a senior state official said.
His official duties and responsibilities will temporarily be filled in by agriculture production commissioner N. S. Madhavan and social welfare secretary Vijay Prakash until a suitable replacement is found, he said.
The Special Vigilance Unit is seeking a court permission to open Verma's two bank lockers, it was learnt.
During the investigation, Verma was found to have amassed assets worth over Rs. 68 lakh, way above his known means of income.
A raid at his various homes earlier this month resulted in the seizure of Rs. 16.5 lakh in cash, nearly 1500 in US dollars, and jewelries worth over Rs. 5 lakh besides several documents indicating investment in real estate and stock market.
