JD-U Leader Shot Dead in Nawada; Son Roughed up by Police

Patna: July 16, 2007

The police in Nawada on Monday morning recovered the body of Janata Dal (U) leader and a former mukhia Akhileshwar Prasad Singh who was shot to death sometime on late Sunday night near the police line.

According to the report, Singh was returning to his home in Narainpur village under Narhat police station in Nawada when his motorcycle was ambushed by some criminals.

Wounds on the victim's face indicated the criminals had shot at least six times that would have killed him instantly.

His body was sent to the sadar hospital for an autopsy.

The incident, however, caused unrest in the region after the police, instead of lodging complaints in the case, roughed up the son of Singh who had gone there to file an FIR in the case.

As per the reports, when Ayodhya Sharan, the son of Akhileshwar Singh, arrived at the police station to lodge a complaint, the police officials beat him up fracturing his arm in the process.

Soon hundreds of JD-U activists surrounded the police station demanding arrest of the killers and removal of the erring police officials.

Director General of Police (DGP) of police Ashish Ranjan Sinha, while talking to reporters in Patna, said two sub-inspectors and three constables had been fired and process to arrest them have been initiated.

"These policemen will be tried under the speedy trial process so no police officer in future would dare to act so insensitive and criminal," Sinha said.
