CM Seeks Help from Opposition in Acquiring Land
Patna: July 18, 2007
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, at the meeting of the legislative council on Wednesday, appealed to the opposition to help the government acquire land for various developmental projects saying it was becoming increasingly difficult for the state to implement any scheme due to sustained resistance by people in giving up lands in many areas.
"Every time we try to acquire a piece of land, strong resistance and protests block our efforts to bring any development in the state and the whole thing is given a political color. Under these circumstances, how do you expect someone to work?" Kumar asked.
Speaking directly to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders, the Chief Minister asked them to extend their cooperation in acquiring land for various projects and not turn every such event into yet another Nandigram or Singur episode.
"Such unnecessary and unreasonable protests are proving to be disastrous for Bihar and unless we get help from all quarters, it would be extremely difficult to launch any project," he said.
"Plans to start new sugar mills and railway factories in Bihar are being hindered by such protests but without adequate lands, we are unable to put these plans into reality in spite of the fact that the government is willingly offering prime rates to these landowners," Kumar said.
