Protest over Death of Teenager in Patna City

Patna: July 18, 2007

Students in Patna on Wednesday staged a protest by blocking Sudarshan Path under Khajekalan police station in Patna City after Ravi Kumar, a 14-year old student from Patna City, succumbed to his injuries that he sustained during a student-police clash last week.

Demanding punitive actions against the erring police officials, the protestors blocked the road with the dead body of the victim and forced the shops to down their shutters.

Burning tires and other objects on the road, the protestors, mostly students, also demanded compensation for the victim's family members and arrests of police officers who opened fire at a crowd last week after the mob set a bus on fire and ransacked a police station following a road accident near Menhdiganj crossing that killed two children on the road.

Senior police officials rushed to the troubled area and after much negotiation, managed to disperse the crowd after nearly three hours of melee.

The victim was later cremated at Khajekalan Ghat under heavy police presence.
