Patna: July 19, 2007
The Vigilance sleuths in Patna on Thursday got a dazzling shock when they recovered nearly 9 kilograms of gold from the locker of fallen IAS officer and minor irrigation officer S. S. Verma, Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) IG A. K. Upadhyaya said.
The locker in the Allahabad Bank, Sheikhpura branch, was opened in the presence of Verma and a number of SVU officers.
Over 9 kilogram of gold including a gold brick alone weighing 1 kilogram, 1.276 kilogram of silver, 800 gold coins, and Rs. 2.58 lakh in cash were seized from the locker that left most investigative officials shocked and bewildered.
The gold and silver deposit is believed to be in the excess of Rs. 72 lakh, Upadhyaya said.
A locker owned by the brother-in-law of Verma was also opened but the police did not find anything of any value, officials said.
A list of all the recovered items have been prepared in the presence of Verma which would be presented to the court for the upcoming trial involving corruption and amassing properties disproportionate to the known means of income of the embattled IAS officer.
In an earlier raid at his various known locations in Patna, the police had recovered Rs. 16.5 lakh in cash, over Rs. 3.5 lakh in gold jewelries, $1500 in US currency, and a number of documents indicating Verma's involvement in various stock market and property deals.
