Patna to have a Rs. 36 Crore Landfill Facility

Patna: July 19, 2007

Urban Development Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, on Thursday, said the state government was in the process of acquiring a piece of land at the outskirts of the state capital to develop a highly-advanced landfill zone to rid Patna of its garbage that make life hellish for most Patna'ites.

"The government has sanctioned Rs. 36 crore to acquire this land which would be used as a central dumping place," Choubey said adding attempts were being made to turn Patna completely trash-free and several projects were underway to achieve this goal in a specified time.

Earlier, Nawal Kishore Yadav raised the question during the Zero Hour saying the entire city was stinking due to heavy rain and garbage floating on low-lying areas in the state capital.

Other opposition leaders also complained about water-logging problem in Patna saying the situation was so bad, people would need boats to go from one place to another.

Choubey said all the Sump Pumps were working at their full capacity and barring a few areas including Kankarbagh and Meethapur, there was no problem of water-logging and some water accumulation in other areas were flowing in the drainage without any blockade.
