PU Students Protest Ban on Entry into University Office

Patna: July 21, 2007

Students of Patna University under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Saturday blocked Ashok Rajpath and burnt the effigy of Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri after the authorities announced their decision to enforce total ban on students' entries in the administrative building of the University.

As the situation worsened, the police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the belligerent students resulting in several injuries.

Two students' leaders were also taken into custody for causing riot within the university campus.

This, however, caused further resentment among the protestors who demanded immediate release of the two leaders. After much negotiation, the police released Umashankar Bharti and Rupesh Kumar.

Threatening to intensify their stir, the students demanded immediate revocation of the new rule saying it violated their basic rights.
