Bhagalpur Riot Victims to get Rs. 1 lakh each
Patna: July 22, 2007
Janata Dal (U) national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari, at a press conference in Patna on Sunday, said the Nitish government would give Rs. 1 lakh to each victim of the Bhagalpur riot and pursue cases against those officials who have so far managed to evade prosecution despite their roles in the 1989 massacre that took 116 lives.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, after holding a meeting with senior officials on Saturday, directed the Home Secretary to review the case and ensure stern actions against those officials who had earlier been found of taking active part in inciting the riot but have managed to escape the long hand of the law, Tiwari said.
The JD-U leader also blamed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav for not only protecting the Bhagalpur riot key accused Kameshwar Yadav but also help him get promotion and medal of gallantry despite no recommendation from the CID department.
"We intend to find out on what basis Kameshwar Yadav was promoted and awarded by the then Director General of Police (DGP) Narain Mishra and if found guilty, actions would be taken against the DGP," Tiwari said at the press conference.
Commenting on the caste-based politics under the RJD regime, Tiwari said that Lalu Prasad Yadav deliberately caused delay in the appointment of a special public prosecutor in the Bhagalpur riot case to protect those who were found guilty but came from the Yadav community.
