Educationists Debate on Common School System
Patna: July 22, 2007
State Education Minister Brishan Patel, speaking at a function organized to celebrate School Day in Patna on Sunday, said that proper implementation of the proposed Common School System was one way to bridge the gap between the rich and poor.
"While we don't intend to shut down private schools in Bihar, we do hope to make the government schools so strong in terms of academic excellence that private schools will automatically cease to exist," Patel said at the event organized by Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI).
Madan Mohan Jha, the state Human Resources Secretary, in his speech said the Common School System would be implemented in Bihar only after elaborate discussion and after seeking detailed public opinion.
Legislator and Bihar Middle School Teachers' Association representative Kedar Pandey said that unless the Common School System was implemented nationally, it would not have the desired effect in a handful of states that are keen on moving forward with the proposed scheme.
Other attendees also opposed the existence of private schools and demanded free education in both private and public schools.
