Bihar Flood Situation Worsens
Patna: July 24, 2007
With nearly a week of non-stop rain, flood situation in Bihar turned for worse as most major rivers registered sharp rise in water level and flood-water gushing into several villages in Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and other northern districts affecting millions of people.
In Sitamarhi, situation further worsened after a breach developed in the Adhwara embankment pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of flood water into nearby villages forcing people to evacuate and move to drier lands.
With flood water overflowing on many roads and state highways, connection between Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur was completely cut-off stranding commuters on both sides.
Similar situation is being experienced in Bhagalpur where train services remain affected due to flooding on railroad tracks.
In Patna district, water level in Ganga and Punpun continued to flow over the danger mark forcing more than 20 lakh people to evacuate.
In Bhagalpur, at least 10 persons were reported drowned when a boat carrying dozens of people capsized in the Ghoga River between Lailaks and Kurbat villages, officials in Bhagalpur said.
Divers were trying to fish out the victims' bodies but had no luck till the time of reporting.
Authorities have put all emergency services on high alert to meet with any contingency.
