Nitish Gets Warm Welcome in Mauritius

Patna: July 26, 2007

The 30-member team of Bihar ministers and officials led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was accorded warm welcome by the Mauritian government at the Sir Sheosagar Ramgoolaam International Airport at Port Louis on Thursday evening marking the beginning of a new era in the cultural and historical ties between the people of Mauritius and Bihar.

Kumar and other members of his team were received by Mauritius Foreign Minister M. Dullu, Art and Cultural Minister M. Goresko, and India's High Commissioner in Mauritius V. Jaishankar.

On Friday morning, the Chief Minister will participate in a flower festival at Sir Sheosagar Ramgoolaam Botanical Garden and later would meet with top Mauritius ministers and officials to discuss possible cultural and business exchanges between Bihar and Mauritius where a large number of people have origins deep-rooted in Bihar villages.

Kumar is also scheduled to take part in the 'Bihar Day', an international festival to celebrate Bhojpuri culture, in Port Louis and will also meet with Mauritius's top industrialists to study the 'sugarcane-based economic development model' of the nation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kumar's drive from his official residence at 1 Anne Marge to the Patna Airport was marred by protest by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders who blocked the road demanding the Chief Minister to postpone his trip to Mauritius in view of the current flood situation in Bihar.
