BSP Calls for Caste Unity
Patna: July 27, 2007
Bolstered by the recent success of Mayawati in UP polls, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders in Bihar, on Friday, held a meeting at the S. K. Memorial Hall to muster upper caste support under the banner of 'Sawarn Samaj Bhaichara Maha-sammelan'.
BSP state in-charge and MP Gandhi Azaad, speaking at the meeting, said complete brotherhood within the society was the only way to communal peace in the country.
"Unlike Congress that uses reservation each election year to win support of the backwards, BSP believes in equality and advocates reservation for those who belong to the upper castes but come from poor backgrounds," Gandhi said.
Others who spoke at the packed hall included UP leader Sachchidanand Rai, J. N. Trivedi, Ramchandra Prasad Yadav, and a host of BSP legislators and activists.
The BSP's sudden love affair with the upper caste people, however, is seen as a political ploy in a day and age when reservation issues have been hijacked by parties like Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) in UP and Bihar.
"These leaders are looking for new ways to fool the voters and flirting with upper caste people, after shunning them for decades, only indicates how desperate these so-called leaders are," said Mahesh Singh, an upper-caste businessman near Mona Cinema.
