Modi, others Review Flood Situation in Bihar
Patna: July 27, 2007
The state government, following a high-level meeting of top officials on Friday, declared a state of red-alert in Bihar and cancelled leaves of all officials involved in flood relief operation amidst report of breach in embankment in many areas.
Modi said officials were directed to go to their respective districts and review flood situation to ensure adequate and timely relief was available to the flood victims.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, Water Resources Minister Ramashray Prasad Singh, Energy Minister Vijendra Prasad Yadav, Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, Chief Secretary A. K. Chowdhary, and officials from Water Resources Department, Emergency Management, Health, and Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).
Modi earlier also updated Governor R. S. Gavai of the relief work going on in flood-affected areas.
Meanwhile, with no sight of respite from rain that has turned most cities into a huge landfill, most major rivers in Bihar were flowing much above the danger mark causing at least 7 more deaths in the state.
Situation in Saran, Raxaul, Sitamarhi, Ghoghardiha, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Jhanjharpur, and Narkatiaganj were grim as flood water from different rivers entered into many parts of the districts with cracks in embankment being reported from across the state.
Traffic on NH 77 remains disrupted with water flowing 4-6 feet above the road level breaking any connection between Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur and Sheohar and Muzaffarpur.
In Kishanganj, flood water washed away Pawna Bridge bringing traffic to a complete stop with no immediate help in sight.
Similar devastation was reported from Madhepura, Katihar, Forbesganj, Harnaut where millions of people remained affected due to flood.
