Leftists Protest against Police Firing in AP

Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India – Marxists (CPI-M), on Sunday took out a rally to protest against police firing at party activists in Khammam in Andhra Pradesh last Saturday during which eight leftists were killed and over a dozen injured.
The rally, led by CPI state secretary B. N. Lal, CPM state president Vijaykant Thakur, and CPM leaders Arun Kumar Mishra and Sarvoday Sharma, started from Kargil Chowk near Gandhi Maidan and ended at Dak Bungalow crossing where the protestors burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajshekhar Reddy demanding immediate arrests of erring police officials and compensation to the victims' families.
Extending their support to the left parties, the CPI (ML) also announced its decision to hold a statewide protest in Bihar against the Khammam killing.
In a faxed letter to the Andhra Governor Rameshwar Thakur, CPI-ML leader demanded setting up an autonomous Land Reforms commissions and implementation of land reforms measures, removal of Khammam District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police (SP), Rs. 10 lakh to the families of those who were killed in the police firing and Rs. 2 lakh to those who received bullet injuries.
They also demanded withdrawal of cases against the Khammam protestors.
