A joint task force of Bihar and Jharkhand police in Patna, following a fierce encounter with a gang of criminals on Tuesday rescued steel businessman Vishwanath Garg and his driver Deepak from a house near the New By-pass Road under Patrakarnagar police station while also arresting four persons in the process.

One gang member was gunned down by the police after he opened fire at the rescuing team, the police said.

As reported, the Patna police received a tip from Saraikela (Jharkhand) Superintendent of Police (SP) Laxman Singh that Garg was kept at a house near the New By-pass Road in Patna.

On early Tuesday morning, a team of Patna police led by SDPO Vivekanand Mandal, Kankarbagh police station in-charge Ramakant Prasad, Kadam Kuan police station in-charge Ajay Kumar, and Patrakarnagar station in-charge Nikhil Kumar, surrounded a house owned by Dr. C. B. Singh.

While two criminals who tried to escape from the house were immediately apprehended by the police, another criminal opened indiscriminate fire at the police team from the roof of the house.

He was shot dead by Kankarbagh police station in-charge Ramakant Prasad.

The police then found Garg and his driver tied up in a room.

While the gang leader Dilip Singh managed to escape in the cover of the darkness, his wife Renu Singh and two more members of the gang were taken into police custody without further incident.

Besides Renu Singh, arrested persons were identified as Virendra Singh, Virendra Paswan, Rajiv Ranjan Shah (all of Vaishali), and Jaffer Ali of Jamui.

The deceased criminal was identified as Babua Jaiswal of Burdhwan in West Bengal.

A carbine, two carbine magazines, one 9mm pistol, five magazines, a .38 revolver, a country-made pistol, 32 live cartridges, a motorcycle and a mobile phone was seized from the criminals, the police said.

Garg and his driver were abducted on July 17 from Basti Road in Chandil in Jharkhand.

The police, however, is yet to recover the car Garg was in when he was kidnapped.
