Doctor Takes Stand in Papiya Ghosh Murder Case
Patna: June 12, 2007
A Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) doctor who had performed autopsies on the bodies of Patna University history professor Dr. Papiya Ghosh and her live-in maid Malti Devi after their brutal murder in Patna last December, appeared before a fast track court on Tuesday to provide details about the wounds caused by multiple stabbings that proved fatal for both women.
Dr. Pankaj Kumar, in his testimony, said Dr. Ghosh was stabbed at least 18 times in her abdomen, neck, and face resulting in excessive bleeding leading to her death.
In contrast, Malti Devi, an elderly lady who had been with Dr. Ghosh for decades, was found stabbed four times – enough to take her life, Dr. Kumar said in his deposition.
Dr. Ghosh, an alumnus of Patna University, was killed at her residence in Pataliputra Colony on the night of December 2, 2006.
Police has maintained robbery was the motive behind the professor and her maid's brutal killings.
Four men who were arrested two weeks after the crime occurred remain in jail under round-the-clock police surveillance.
