Specter of Flood Looms as Rivers Display Rising Trend

Patna: June 14, 2007

With monsoon still a few days away from Bihar, rivers in the state are already showing signs of rising as several small bridges on the National Highway 77 submerged under the water disrupting traffic at many places.

With the water level in the Bagmati going up by nearly three feet in a matter of days, people in Muzaffarpur district are already preparing to flee the area that is going to be affected if millions of gallons of water is pushed into Bihar by Nepal causing breach in the embankment.

Incessant rain in last 24 hours has already flooded several villages in Muzaffarpur district where people are scrambling to gather their valuables and leave the area before situation gets further worse, officials in Muzaffarpur said.

Similar trends are being noticed in other rivers as well including the Gandak, Ganga, Punpun, and Kosi where the water level continues to flirt with the red level indicating tougher days ahead.
