Flood Situation Getting Worse by the Day
Patna: June 15, 2007
Here we go again! If it's half-past June, it's time to worry about flood problem in Bihar. It’s time to worry about saving lives, cattle, and food-grain in North Bihar. It's time to put the para-military on alert.
With more than 90 ml of rain in the first sign of the yet-to-arrive monsoon season in Bihar, more than 250 villages in Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Darbhanga have submerged in water after the left catchments of the Baghmati River developed a breach causing millions of gallons of water to flow into the nearby villages.
According to the Central Water Resources officials, the situation is expected to become even worse in the next 24 to 48 hours as most major rivers continued to show signs of rising with the red danger mark only a few feet away.
Meanwhile, the state government has put the para-military and all officials on alert. "We don't want to wait till last minute to rescue people or save the villages," a senior official said on Friday adding engineers have been directed to keep a close eye on all embankments and prepare for relief in the affected areas.
