State Health Minister Apologizes for Shoving a Woman

Patna: June 16, 2007

State Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh, while continuing to deny that he ever misbehaved or pushed a widow at a public meeting in Bhagalpur a few days ago, apologized to her for any inconvenience caused to her and promised to compensate her and help her by finding a job for her son.

"I did not intend to hurt her in any way but if I did, I apologize. I have immense respect for women and would never do anything to hurt them," Narendra Singh said in Patna on Saturday.

As reported in the media, Singh allegedly pushed Halko Devi, a widow whose husband was once employed by the Bhagalpur University, as she approached him to request for a job for her son. Halko Devi also claimed that she hurt her arm when she fell on the ground.

The incident caused a statewide outrage with various political parties demanding sacking of Singh while criticizing the Nitish government for not taking any action against him.
