14 Accused Convicted in 1989 Bhagalpur Massacre

A Bhagalpur court on Monday convicted 14 accused in the state's one of the most gruesome communal carnages when over a hundred Muslims were killed by a group of people on the morning of October 27, 1989.
District and Sessions Judge S. N. Mishra, after hearing the closing statements from both prosecution and defense, convicted 14 men including the then police station in-charge of Jagdishpur Ramchandra Singh, Saryug Prasad Singh, Thakur Paswan, Shivlal Mandal, Ramdeo Mandal, Prabhash Mandal, Sukhdeo Mandal, Kuldeep Mandal, Naresh Mandal, Ajablal Mandal, Yadu Mandal, and Subhash Mandal, Arjun Mandal, and Thakur Paswan under various Acts of the Indian Criminal Penal Code including 112, 147, 148, 149, and 302.
Punishment phase in the case will begin on June 27.
Another accused in the case Jaiprakash Mandal has been declared an absconder. The court asked the police to catch him and present him before the court on June 27.
Other cases related with the October 27, 1989 violence would be brought to an end within next three months, Bhagalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) J. S. Gangwar said after Monday convictions.
In the original FIR filed following the carnage, 24 people were named accused. While six of them have already died, two were exonerated, a minor boy was referred to a juvenile court and one has been declared an absconder.
