The police in Patna rained batons on the Home Guard and Bihar Military Police (BMP) job aspirants after they tried to break into a police barricading at R-Block on Thursday during their rally for immediate appointments of successful candidates.

Situation soon got out of hand as soon as the rally that begun at Gandhi Maidan reached the R-Block roundabout where the police had erected a barricade to prevent protestors from moving forward.

Angry at the barricade, the protestors broke the cordon and attacked the police by hurling bricks, rocks, and empty bottles in which several police were hurt. Senior police officials including Kotwali DSP Kumar Amar Singh, Sachivalaya DSP Sridhar Mandal, and Town DSP Sushant Saroj were also present when the protestors assaulted the security jawans.

When the belligerent crowd refused to back out, the police first tried to subdue them by using water stream but when that failed to calm down the protestors, the police then opened lathi charge on them resulting in several injuries.

More than 20 protestors were arrested for disturbing law and order and attacking police officials.
