Kankarbagh Residents Protest against Power, Water Scarcity
Patna: June 22, 2007
Hundreds of angry residents of Ashok Nagar in Patna on Friday morning blocked the Kankarbagh bypass and chanted anti-government slogans for nearly four hours after enduring a week without electricity or drinking water.
With summer in its extreme form, residents of Ashok Nagar woke up on Friday morning to yet another day without electricity or drinking water. Angered by the government's apathy towards their problems, over two hundred men and women stacked woods on the Bypass and set it on fire causing a long traffic jam on both directions.
The flame soon reached so high that the administration had to rush fire trucks to control it from spreading to nearby buildings.
As reported, Ashok Nagar lost power when the transformer in the area got burnt about a week ago. After several complaints, the power company replaced the old transformer with a new one that also got burnt in a matter of hours after the replacement.
After much assurance and promise to replace the transformer with a new one, the crowd finally dispersed and normalcy was restored in the area.
At the time of reporting, power engineers were seen installing a new transformer.
