Beur Warden Hit by Bullet under Suspicious Circumstances
Patna: June 25, 2007
Officials at Patna's Beur Jail are investigating the case of a firing during which a warden was struck by a bullet causing serious injury to his knee even as the officials termed the incident as accidental and not a case of gang violence as earlier reported in some media.
The incident occurred a little after 3 pm on Monday when a stray bullet pierced the right knee of Warden Bhuwaneshwar Paswan, 45, as he passed through the main gate where some Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) jawans were cleaning their weapons.
It is not clear if the firing was accidental or intentional. Jail officials are investigating the case.
Paswan, who was rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), remains in critical but stable condition.
Phulwarisharif police station in-charge Shabbir Ahmed, who arrived at the jail to review the situation also called the firing accidental.
"A SAP jawan was providing training to three jail wardens when someone's rifle accidentally went off hitting Paswan in his knee," Ahmed said.
Prison superintendent Dilip Kumar denied any gang war between rival gang members.
"The police is investigating the case but based on the initial investigation, it does appear to be an accident," Kumar said.
