Gardener Gets Stuck in Elevator; Dies

Patna: June 27, 2007

A gardener who worked for the Vigilance Department, in a bizarre turn of events, got trapped in an elevator in the Information Building in Patna on Wednesday and was crushed to death as people desperately tried to help him, Sachivalaya police said.

According to the report, Mahendra Prasad Yadav had been working in the Vigilance Department as its gardener and caretaker. However, lately because of not enough work at the Vigilance Department, he was deputed at the Information Building.

On Wednesday, as Yadav took the elevator to go upstairs, suddenly there was a power failure and Yadav got stuck in it. When the power did not return for few minutes, he tried to pry the elevator door open and crawl out of it.

As he was making his move to get out of the elevator, the power returned and the lift started to move up pulling the body of Yadav stuck between the doors with it.

By the time people rushed to his help and managed to bring the elevator to a stop, his body was badly mutilated.

He was rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident caused an outrage outside the building as hundreds of people demanded compensation for the victim's family.

The police is looking for any wrongdoing on part of the technicians working on the elevator.
