Auto-Rickshaw Strike Affects Commuters in Patna

Patna: June 29, 2007

People in Patna had a harrowing time on Friday as the auto-rickshaw strike entered into day two of its protest against what they termed as 'officials' highhandedness' and 'an attempt to steal their livelihood' following a crackdown on illegal drivers and arrest of some of their leaders.

With only rickshaws plying on the street, people commuting from Digha, Patna City, Sheikhpura, and other distant areas of the district had a tough time reaching their destinations. A few tempos that were seen plying on the street were having a heyday charging their customers higher than usual rates.

Meanwhile, the police claimed there was no tempo strike in Patna and the tempo drivers were afraid to resume their services apprehending police crackdown and confiscation of their vehicles.

The administration had earlier launched a district-wide campaign to check the status of all vehicles plying in Patna and crackdown on all illegal drivers.

The campaign will conclude on Saturday and that will also bring an end to the so-called strike of the tempo driver, said a senior traffic police.
