Eight BSEB Employees Fired for Feb. 27 Statewide Strike
Patna: Mar. 6, 2007
Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), in the aftermath of February 27 statewide blackout caused by the unions' strike, fired eight of its employees on Tuesday on the grounds of failing to perform their duties in a professional manner and engaging in activities unbecoming of state employees.
The board also transferred 13 engineers and is believed to be working on a list of other employees who could also soon be getting the pink slips, sources in the BSEB said.
All eight sacked employees were associated with Fatuha, Biharsharif, Jakkanpur, Gaya, and Chandauti power grids, officials said.
The 25-hour long statewide strike had paralyzed all normal functioning in the state. Except for the VVIP sections of the state capital, the entire city, along with other parts of the state and Patna Junction, plunged into darkness causing all the trains to be delayed and denying the citizens of drinking water.
With the firing and transfers of the power employees, the government is hoping to send a tough message to other union members who, until now, had been too quick to resort to disruptive acts like strikes and rallies while putting the entire state population into heap of inconveniences.
The strike had caused immense embarrassment to the Nitish government allowing the opposition leaders to demand for the Chief Minister's resignation.
