Patna: Mar. 8, 2007

Fast Track Court justice Om Prakash, on Thursday, formally charged against five accused, including a lawyer, in the murder of Patna University history professor Papiya Ghosh and her maid Malti Devi who were brutally killed on the eventful night of December 2 of last year.

Shankar Sao, Ashish Kumar, Anil Oraon, and Manohar Kumar were charged with armed robbery and murder of Prof. Ghosh and her maid under Section 396 and 412 of the Indian Criminal Penal Code while Ramchandra Mahto, a lawyer by profession, was charged with storing the stolen items at his house given to him by the killers.

Witnesses in the case will be produced before the court on March 20.

Denying his role in the double murders, Mahto asked the court to drop charges against him that was promptly denied by the judge. Justice Om Prakash also dismissed the plea of Manohar Kumar to treat him as a minor.

The court read the charges in detail to the four accused but they continued to maintain their innocence.
