Two people were killed when they jumped off from the speeding Delhi-Dibrugarh Brahmaputra Mail after a rumor of the train on fire spread in the general compartment near Bhadaura railway station under Danapur division of the East Central Railways on Thursday.

According to the railway officials, it remains unclear as to how the rumor of the fire in train started.

Eyewitnesses said things were going normal until someone said the train was on fire. Suddenly all the passengers in the general compartment ran towards the door while some tried to break open the windows in an attempt to escape what they though was a certain disaster.

Two men who jumped off the train were hit by the speeding Delhi-bound Shramjeevi Express and died on the spot. A third person who also was hurt by the Shramjeevi Express was rushed to the Danapur Railway Hospital where he remains in serious conditions.

The stampede caused injuries to more than two dozen people who were treated at Patna Junction and released.

Officials are trying to determine how the rumor started and attempts are being made to identify the two victims.
