The police in Patna on Saturday arrested one Haseeb Reza, a leader of the banned extremist outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) from a house in Phulwarisharif. He was wanted by the police in a number of cases involving anti-national activities.

Reza, the state secretary of SIMI, denied having taken part in any anti-national activities saying he had been in jail for five years and had no contact with other SIMI activists.

Gandhi Maidan police station in-charge Sabir Ahmed, while talking to reporters, said that after being released from the prison for his role in the Godhra train-burning incident, Reza and three others had been on the run following a case against them in 2001.
