JD-U Wins Islampur By-poll

Biharsharif: Mar. 14, 2007

Janata Dal (U) candidate Pratima Sinha, on Wednesday, emerged as the winner of the Assembly by-poll in Islampur constituency in Nalanda district defeating her nearest rival and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rakesh Kumar Roshan by over 9,000 votes.

Sinha won the seat that was vacated by JD-U leader Ramswaroop Prasad after he was nominated to the Lok Sabha.

Calling Sinha's win 'a win for justice and development', a visibly jubilant Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he was very pleased with the result as the RJD president and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav had left no stones unturned in ensuring a victory for his candidate Rakesh Kumar Roshan.

With the win, Sinha becomes the very first woman ever to be elected in Vidhan Sabha from Nalanda district.

"By voting for me, people have confirmed their faith in the Nitish-led NDA government," Sinha said during the victory celebration in Islampur.
