Sunil Pandey Creates Yet Another Controversy
Patna: Mar. 14, 2007
Suspended Janata Dal (U) leader Sunil Pandey, a name no stranger to controversies, on Wednesday, created yet another furor when he, on his way from Beur Jail to the state Assembly, decided to take a detour to his house in Patna throwing away all legal protocols in spite of being surrounded by a police escort team.
According to the police report, Pandey, who makes Patna Beur Jail his home for the role he played in the unsuccessful attempt to extort money from a powergrid engineer last August, using his political clout and decided to pay a visit to his home in Patna.
As soon as the report of Pandey's illegal detour came into the knowledge of senior police officials, he was ordered sent back to jail even as the Home Secretary ordered a complete probe into the incident saying actions against the police escort team would be taken if found to be guilty of failing to do their duties.
Pandey, the legislator from Piro in Bhojpur district, was suspended by the Janata Dal (U) leadership for his involvement in a number of criminal cases including kidnapping and extortion, and embarrassing the government by verbally assaulting a local hotel employee while being in a state of drunkenness.
The government now is considering imposing a total ban on his freedom to move outside the prison. Final decision will be taken after consultation with a district judge, officials said.
